Your kids’ eyes could suck up my soul.
Your sister, Tonya, directed me to your site and I love your photos! I have some questions… What camera do you use and what equipment did you use for this shot? Beautiful!
Belinda – I happen to use a Nikon D90 but any camera that allows for manual control of exposure and flash settings would work. My camera had a 50mm fixed lens on it and the exposure was 1/200 at f5.6 (1/200 is the max sync speed of my camera). For this particular shot I used a 42″ white reflector held up behind the subject as a backdrop (any white wall would work just as well) Behind Lizzy I have a flash that is zoomed to 70mm 1/16 power aimed up at the reflector to create the halo around her head, provide backlighting, and create good separation from the background. To the front I have a different flash at 1/2 power that is shot thru a white umbrella, is very close to the subject and is just barely to camera left. I am probably touching the umbrella with my camera and lens I am so close. I am hand holding both the umbrella/flash combo and the camera. Once you get familiar with the basics, it is a very quick shot. Probably took me 15 minutes from starting to setup to finished picture.
btw – You also need some way to remotely trigger your flashes. One of my flashes is connected to my camera via a sync cord. The other is triggered optically – meaning that when it sees another flash, it goes off.
If you click on the picture it will go to the flickr page that has all of the info I provided above, but in an abbreviated format.
Glad you like my pictures!
